As the Pibor River overflows and heavy rains are expected in the coming weeks, preparations are underway in Pibor Town, the headquarters of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), to combat potential floods. Oleyo Akwer Nyalus, the GPAA Information minister, shared that dykes have been constructed and a committee formed to minimize the impact of the impending floods.
The proactive measures are crucial due to Pibor’s susceptibility to flooding, with dykes erected north and south of the town to a height of over one meter. The committee is ready to assist in evacuating individuals from high-risk areas. Public awareness campaigns have been initiated to alert residents of the potential risks, with hotspot areas identified and everyone on high alert.
The national government, represented by humanitarian affairs minister Albino Akol, recently visited to evaluate the town’s preparedness. The GPAA government is urging aid agencies to provide support during this critical period. With collaborative efforts and effective strategies in place, Pibor Town is gearing up to address the challenges posed by the anticipated floods.
