Get ready to pay more for your favorite spirits as Australia’s spirits tax has once again been increased to $103.89 per liter, making it the third highest in the world. This rise will impact distilleries, venues, and consumers alike, with prices expected to go up for popular drinks like gin and tonic or margaritas.
According to Craig Michael, director of Bellarine Distillery, these constant tax hikes are putting a strain on businesses, making financial planning and decision-making difficult. Mick Gibb, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, pointed out how venues are forced to increase prices to cover the additional costs, ultimately affecting customers.
Australian Distillers Association has called for the government to freeze the tax, which has increased by over 20% since the start of the pandemic. This recent hike comes after a similar increase in beer tax, putting a strain on beer drinkers as well.
