Egypt has officially joined South Africa in filing a lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of violating the Genocide Convention in Gaza. The move comes in response to Israeli attacks on Palestinian civilians and infrastructure in Gaza.
Egypt called on the UN Security Council to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, stop military operations in Rafah, and protect Palestinian civilians. Israel has faced accusations of genocide before the ICJ, with a provisional ruling in January ordering them to halt genocidal acts and provide humanitarian assistance in Gaza.
South Africa’s submission to the ICJ includes allegations of Israel committing genocide against Palestinians, causing harm and creating conditions leading to their destruction. The lawsuit is based on the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, with Israel denying the claims as “unfounded.”
