Head of the UN Humanitarian Affairs Office (OCHA), Andrea De Domenico, expressed concern over the escalating human suffering in Gaza during his final briefing at the UN Headquarters in New York. Highlighting the impact of ongoing conflicts, he emphasized the urgent need for the international community to address the question of prioritizing human security over other concerns.
De Domenico painted a grim picture of Gaza, referring to it as a “graveyard for children” due to the high number of casualties and displacement. Despite efforts to provide aid and humanitarian assistance, the situation remains dire with over 1.9 million displaced individuals and staggering casualties.
The challenges faced by aid workers in Gaza and the West Bank were also brought to light, with increasing hostility from authorities hampering relief efforts. De Domenico urged for a renewed commitment to scale up operations and address the alarming levels of food insecurity and health issues in the region.
Despite the obstacles, De Domenico remains hopeful about programs like the UNRWA and UN Children’s Fund initiative, which aims to provide education to 30,000 children in Gaza. As the international community grapples with complex humanitarian crises, his words serve as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing human lives above all else.
