Iran’s Interim Foreign Minister Asserts Right to Self-Defense After Israeli Assassination of Hamas Leader in Tehran
Following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of Palestinian Hamas in Tehran by Israel, Interim Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani emphasized Iran’s right to self-defense and reciprocal action. He condemned the Israeli act as a violation of Iran’s sovereignty and a threat to regional peace.
Bagheri Kani called for an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to confront Israel’s actions and criticized the UN Security Council for failing to denounce the assassination. The minister warned of potential risks to regional stability and urged the international community to take a stand against Israel’s aggression.
The assassination of Haniyeh came shortly after the killing of a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut by Israel. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned both attacks and recognized Iran’s right to self-defense. Bagheri Kani urged the international community to pressure Israel to end its atrocities in Gaza, where thousands of Palestinians have been killed in the ongoing conflict.
