Parliament is beginning its summer recess today, but there is still business happening in government. Angela Rayner, the deputy PM and housing secretary, is launching a task force to recommend sites for what they call “a new generation of new towns”. Led by Sir Michael Lyons and Dame Kate Barker, the taskforce aims to suggest locations for these new developments, which will focus on affordable housing.
The new towns will be large communities with at least 10,000 homes each, addressing the need for affordable housing and new infrastructure. They will adhere to a ‘new towns code’ to ensure they are well-designed and sustainable places.
Rayner will discuss this further on various media platforms today. Additionally, we are following the Southport riots on a separate blog. Stay tuned for more updates.
