Hungary’s foreign minister accuses Polish counterpart of lying in diplomatic spat
Tensions between Poland and Hungary have escalated over differences regarding Ukraine and economic ties with Russia. The rift deepened with the new pro-EU government in Poland, straining the historic alliance between the two countries.
The dispute came to a head when Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó accused his Polish counterpart, Radosław Sikorski, of lying about a proposed EU meeting in Ukraine. The Polish foreign ministry defended Sikorski’s interpretation of Szijjártó’s response, leading to a public feud between the two officials.
In a tit-for-tat exchange, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán criticized Poland for alleged hypocrisy in its dealings with Russia. In response, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Wladyslaw Teofil Bartoszewski refuted the claims, emphasizing Poland’s commitment to the EU and NATO.
