Joaquin Guzman Lopez, son of notorious drug lord “El Chapo”, pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking and weapons charges in the United States after a dramatic capture. He stood in court, answering questions with a simple “Yes, your honour”. Guzman Lopez and Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada of the Sinaloa cartel were arrested in El Paso, Texas last week.
Zambada, known for his operational role in the cartel, has stayed under the radar for years. Guzman’s sons, including Guzman Lopez, now lead a faction of the cartel exporting fentanyl to the US. Tight security at the hearing banned electronics.
Zambada also pleaded not guilty last week, facing drug trafficking charges. The capture prompted Mexican President Lopez Obrador to urge cartels to avoid conflict. Rumours about the capture include Zambada’s alleged abduction by Guzman Lopez.
Guzman Lopez’s lawyer denied any cooperation with the government amid changing stories reported in the media. The US government had offered a reward for Zambada’s capture.
Recently, other Sinaloa cartel figures, including Guzman’s sons, have faced legal challenges in the US, highlighting the ongoing battle against drug trafficking.
