US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has confirmed that Hezbollah was likely behind a rocket strike in the Israel-annexed Golan Heights that resulted in the death of 12 young people. Blinken expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorist attacks during a press conference in Japan.
The Israeli military reported that the rocket, which carried a 50kg warhead, was fired by Hezbollah at a football field in the Druze Arab town of Majdal Shams. Hezbollah, however, denied responsibility for the attack.
Blinken emphasized the need to end the conflict in Gaza, stating that it has caused too much suffering and loss of life. He reiterated the importance of maintaining a ceasefire in Gaza to prevent further escalation of violence.
Hezbollah is reportedly on high alert, anticipating potential retaliation from Israel following the Golan Heights attack. The Taoiseach of Ireland has condemned the rocket strikes and called for de-escalation in the region to prevent further tragedy.
