The Ministry of Energy is considering ending free electricity benefits for bureaucrats, judges, parliamentarians, and other officials to reduce capacity charges paid to independent power producers (IPPs). Defence Minister Khawaja Asif denied claims that parliamentarians receive free electricity, stating that he has paid his bills for 35 years.
A proposal to eliminate free petrol for all institutions in the second phase is also under review. The government is facing a financial crisis and aims to boost exports to $60 billion. The power division is considering reducing charges for factories and reviewing the performance of regulatory authorities. The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry plans to petition the Supreme Court against IPP owners for auditing their projects.
The Pakistan Business Forum criticizes power purchase agreements and demands forensic audits of IPPs to identify irregularities. They suggest renegotiating contracts, exploring alternative energy resources, and making payments in rupees. These measures aim to save the country from economic collapse.
