A Russian navy ship recently made a three-day visit to Cuba, following a previous visit by a submarine and other naval vessels from Russia. The Smolny training ship received a warm welcome in Havana, with Cuban artillery firing salutes as it arrived in the harbor.
Accompanied by two other ships, the Smolny is part of the Baltic Fleet group on a friendly visit to Cuba, according to Russia’s embassy in Havana. This visit highlights the close relationship between the two countries.
This naval presence near US territory comes at a time of heightened tensions between Russia and Western countries over the conflict in Ukraine. The US also responded to the Russian submarine visit by sending a submarine to Guantanamo Bay.
Cuba’s history as a key Soviet ally during the Cold War is underscored by past events, such as the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. The recent Russian naval visits to Cuba evoke memories of this historical period.
