Federal Police have questioned Congressman Alexandre Ramagem, former head of Brazil’s intelligence agency Abin, regarding documents found in his emails instructing former President Jair Bolsonaro to cast doubts on Brazil’s voting system.
The details were disclosed by O Globo newspaper early on Friday. The documents and Mr. Ramagem’s statement to the Federal Police have not been publicly shared.
Mr. Ramagem, a career Federal Police officer, served as the head of Abin from 2019 to 2022. Currently, he is running for mayor of Rio de Janeiro as Mr. Bolsonaro’s chosen candidate, trailing behind incumbent Eduardo Paes in polls.
Additionally, Mr. Ramagem is under investigation for an illegal spying scheme on journalists during his tenure at Abin. He was interviewed by the Federal Police on July 17 after a recent operation in the case.
Previously, a recording made by Mr. Ramagem during a 2020 meeting with Mr. Bolsonaro was unsealed by a Supreme Court justice. The recording captured a discussion on sensitive intelligence to aid Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in avoiding criminal charges.
One of the documents found in Mr. Ramagem’s emails alleges fraud in the 2018 elections. Mr. Bolsonaro faced a runoff in that election against Fernando Haddad.
In March 2020, Mr. Bolsonaro vowed to present evidence that he won the 2018 election in the first round but never fulfilled that promise.
