Heavy rain in West Sumatra triggered a flash flood and cold lava flow from Mount Marapi, leading to a devastating disaster that has left at least 14 people, including children, dead with many others missing, as per rescue officials.
The disaster struck Agam and Tanah Datar districts in West Sumatra on Saturday evening, following hours of heavy rain, causing a flash flood and cold lava flow. Cold lava, also known as lahar, consists of volcanic materials like ash, sand, and pebbles carried down the volcano’s slopes by rain.
Rescuers have been dispatched to search for missing victims and transport survivors to shelters. Evacuation centers and emergency posts have been set up by the local government in the affected areas. Indonesia, prone to landslides and floods during the rainy season, has witnessed several deadly incidents in recent years due to natural disasters.
The tragedy in West Sumatra comes just two months after a deadly flooding incident on the same island, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability of the region to such calamities.
