Brazilian Court Blocks Plan to Pave Amazon Rainforest Highway

Judge Maria Elisa Andrade highlighted the lack of a climate impact study and the potential for increased deforestation if the road is paved. Organizations like the Climate Observatory warn that illegal logging and land grabbing could escalate if the road is improved, leading to a significant loss of forested areas.

Current Status

The BR-319, originally built in the 1970s, is currently in disrepair and becomes impassable during the rainy season, limiting access for loggers. President Lula da Silva, who succeeded Bolsonaro, has shown interest in paving the road while ensuring environmental protection, though no work has begun.
