Paid parental leave and Medicare services are set to receive a major funding boost in next week’s federal budget. Treasurer Jim Chalmers announced in an interview on Today that the government will allocate $1.1 billion for super contributions to support paid parental leave, with an additional $600 million annually once the program is operational.
Chalmers emphasized the importance of not letting parents miss out on superannuation benefits while on parental leave. Starting July 1, 2025, eligible parents will receive 12% superannuation contributions during government-funded parental leave.
Furthermore, the government will invest $3 billion to strengthen Medicare and $8.5 billion in overall health initiatives. Health Minister Mark Butler also announced $227 million for 29 new urgent care clinics, aiming to ease the cost of healthcare for Australians.
