Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, left the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Wednesday, heading to Spain on an official visit.
The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, invited Al-Sudani last June to visit Spain during a conference held in Jordan to discuss the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
Al-Sudani’s visit to Spain comes after he ordered authorities in the government to reach agreements with Spanish firms to take part in reconstruction efforts ongoing in Iraq.
In a phone conversation with Sanchez in May 2024, Al-Sudani stated that he hoped to form a strategic alliance with Spain.
Al-Sudani emphasized the importance of Spain’s recognition of Palestine in view of the current hostilities in Gaza. Both leaders talked about strengthening bilateral ties and the possibility of economic cooperation.
A significant step in the two countries’ economic relationship took place after a one billion euro deal was signed to help Spanish firms get involved in Iraq’s private sector growth.
By offering Spanish technology and experience for a range of initiatives in Iraq, this deal demonstrates both countries’ commitment to increasing trade and investment.
Additionally, Spain is working on infrastructure projects, such as proposals to build a railway between the southern Iraqi city of Basra and Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt. The goal of this initiative is to increase travel and commerce between Iraq and countries in the region.
Iraq and Spain seem dedicated to strengthening their bilateral ties, as seen by the continuous talks on important cooperation agreements and strategic alliances.
