Hamas said Wednesday it is committed to cooperating with “any efforts” to achieve a truce in Gaza after a ceasefire was reached in Lebanon.
“We are focused on halting the aggression against our people, based on the conditions we have agreed upon nationally: ceasing aggression on Gaza, the withdrawal of occupation forces, the return of displaced persons, and the completion of a comprehensive and real prisoner exchange deal,” it added.
Hamas commended what it called the “pivotal role” Hezbollah had played in supporting Gaza, and highlighted “the great sacrifices made by Hezbollah and its leadership,” particularly the group’s former leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Beirut on September 27.
The deal “marks an important milestone in shattering (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu’s illusions of redrawing the Middle East map through force, as well as his delusions of defeating the resistance or disarming it,” Hamas added.
Remember: Hezbollah began firing near-daily rockets at Israeli territory a day after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, triggering the ongoing devastating war in Gaza.
Hezbollah had vowed to continue firing at Israel until it ceased its assault in Gaza.
The Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire in Lebanon potentially brings an end to more than a year of cross-border strikes and months of a full-scale war that has killed thousands.
The ceasefire appears to be holding for the most part since it came into effect at 4 a.m. local time.
