Woman dies, two injured after being ambushed along Torit-Hiyala Road

A 35-year-old Torit woman identified as Itiara Jamuz succumbed to her injuries while two other people, another woman, and a soldier, were injured when they were ambushed and shot along the Torit-Hiyala Road in Eastern Equatoria State on Monday.

According to local officials, the woman was shot and injured while in a police vehicle that was delivering the body of Ofere Moliho who was shot dead on Saturday in Haforiere Village during a foiled cattle raid. She later died after being referred to Torit Civil Hospital.

According to local authorities, four people have been killed in the last week in Hiyala Payam and this has created panic and fear of revenge attacks among the communities.

The Paramount Chief of Hiyala Payam, Galileo Ohide, told Radio Tamazuj that the incident happened on Monday evening when unknown criminals shot at a police vehicle and that the two passengers who sustained injuries are currently receiving treatment at Torit Civil Hospital.

“On Monday, the dead body of a boy from Hiyala who was killed in Haforiere was being brought by a government team and some unknown youths ambush their police vehicle,” he explained. “Three people were injured and were rushed to the hospital but one of them, a woman, died in the evening and her body was taken to Oguruny for burial. Another woman who the perpetrator was targeting for revenge killing was injured on the hand and a soldier was also injured.”

“So, three people were injured but one died and two are in hospital.” Chief Ohide added.

For his part, Rizio Otida, the chief of Oguruny Village, condemned the attack on a government vehicle that claimed the life of their dear one and urged security personnel to hunt and arrest the culprits.

“On Monday, a woman from here in Oguruny called Itiara Jamux, 35, went to Hiyala where she boarded a vehicle that was shot at and she was injured and later died. Are we fighting with Hiyala? The youth who shot at the vehicle should be apprehended,” he stated. “Besides, this is a government vehicle belonging to the police that was carrying the dead body of a person killed in Haforiere.  If you want to revenge, do you target a government vehicle?”

Meanwhile, Dr. Mustafa Lokuru, the Medical Director at Torit Civil Hospital, said several efforts to rescue the injured woman were unsuccessful as she sustained serious internal bleeding in the kidney.

“They rushed her to the hospital but the damage to her organs was serious, she was bleeding and despite the efforts of the doctors to save her, it was not possible,” he stated.
