Turkey’s Kuzeyboru to provide Iraq with infrastructure pipes

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Leading Turkish pipe producer Kuzeyboru has inked large contracts with both Iraq and the UK to provide infrastructure pipes.

Kuzeyboru revealed that it has entered into an infrastructure pipe purchase agreement worth nearly $2.43 billion with both Iraq and the UK, according to Turkiye Today.

The Iraqi Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, announced in October that Turkish businesses had been given six contracts to upgrade the irrigation network in the country.

After this declaration, it was made public that Kuzeyboru was among the Turkish businesses selected to take part in this important initiative.

The contract for infrastructure pipes in Iraq was formally signed, the company said in a public disclosure made through Turkey’s Public Disclosure Platform (KAP).

Iraq and Turkey maintain a significant and complex trade relationship, characterized by a substantial exchange of goods and strategic economic interdependence.

Irrigation in Iraq remains crucial for agricultural productivity, with approximately 70 percent of the country’s cultivated area relying on irrigation systems. However, the sector faces significant challenges due to outdated infrastructure, water scarcity exacerbated by climate change, and geopolitical factors affecting water availability.

The World Food Program (WFP) has played a pivotal role in introducing modern irrigation systems to Iraqi farmers, helping them increase their crop yields substantially.

Many irrigation systems are outdated and poorly maintained. Most pumping stations were built in the early 1970s and require urgent upgrades to improve efficiency and reliability.

While Iraq’s irrigation system has the potential for significant improvement through modernization and better management practices, immediate action is necessary to address the pressing issues of infrastructure decay and economic sustainability in agriculture.
