Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The spokesperson of the Planning Ministry, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, said that the population census will be carried out completely electronically, including data collection, classification, and computation.
In a statement to Al-Jazeera, Al-Hindawi explained that it will take around two months to evaluate the vast amount of data in order to provide the full results.
On November 20 and 21, Iraq will hold its first full population census since 1987, following the 1997 census that excluded the Kurdistan region of Iraq.
Iraq’s political and social future will be impacted by this significant national event, which is the tenth census the country has seen in its modern history. It is anticipated to help provide accurate data on the population in Iraq.
Al-Hindawi emphasized that the required preparations to perform the population census in all Iraqi provinces, including Iraqi Kurdistan, have been finished. He highlighted that the preliminary results will be made public within 24 hours.
The coronavirus outbreak forced a postponement of a census scheduled for 2020.
The Iraqi Ministry of Planning revealed an estimation of the Iraqi population in 2023, indicating that it exceeded 43 million.
The Planning Ministry mentioned last July that it is working to conduct a national census in 2024 to serve development plans by setting up a comprehensive database of the population in Iraq.
According to the last national census carried out in 1997, during the era of the late President Saddam Hussein, Iraq’s population at that time was 19 million. It is estimated that there were around three million people living in the Kurdistan region of Iraq at that time.
