Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi cabinet decided on Tuesday to enable all public workers and affiliates to voluntarily donate a portion of their salaries, benefits, and pensions to help Gaza and Lebanon.
The government has authorized a voluntary donation scheme for public employees and retirees, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
To participate in the initiative, one may choose to withhold one percent from their salary, benefits, or pensions.
According to the Prime Minister’s priorities, the money will be put evenly into accounts that assist Gaza and Lebanon as of December 1, 2024.
The decision follows the Iraqi cabinet’s firm rejection of the war Israel is trying to expand in the Middle East after Israel sent a letter to the UN Security Council in which it called for immediate action against the activity of the pro-Iranian militias in Iraq, whose territory is being used to attack Israel.
Since Hamas declared the start of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7, 2023, Israel has continued to attack the Gaza Strip.
Since October 7, Israeli air and ground attacks in the Gaza Strip have killed over 43,000 people and injured over 102,000 more.
In early October 2024, the Israeli army announced the launch of a military assault in southern Lebanon, focusing on Hezbollah infrastructure and positions in a few of the neighboring municipalities.
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, over 2,860 people have been killed and over 13,000 injured by Israeli bombings on Lebanon since the escalation started.
