Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, and the US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources, Geoffrey Pyatt, discussed on Thursday the Iraqi government’s efforts to meet its international commitments to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
The sides met on the sidelines of their participation in the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) held in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, according to a statement released by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.
Hussein and Pyatt reviewed Iraq’s initiatives to boost the generation of renewable energy and attain electrical resource self-sufficiency.
The Iraqi Foreign Minister talked about the most recent details of the Iraqi government’s initiatives to reduce gas flaring associated with crude oil extraction.
Hussein emphasized that the government in Iraq is moving forward with creating a program to utilize associated gas in collaboration with significant multinational corporations.
Last June, during the inauguration of an associated gas processing project in the Halfaya oilfield in Maysan governorate, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, confirmed that the utilization of associated gas in Iraq has increased from 50 percent to 61 percent.
Al-Sudani also noted that efforts are ongoing to utilize all the gas produced in Iraq until gas flaring completely stops by 2028.
In September, the Iraqi Minister of Oil, Hayan Abdul-Ghani, revealed that the percentage of associated gas utilized in Iraq was 51 percent in 2022 and rose to more than 65 percent in 2024.
The increased percentage of associated gas utilization in Iraq followed several projects carried out by local and international companies.
