At least 300 people with disabilities (PwDs) in Unity State have received different devices to assist them with mobility.
The devices, including 100 wheelchairs, 100 white canes and 100 crutches, were distributed by the Women Agency for Resilience and Transformation (WART) in partnership with the State Ministry of Gender and Child Social Welfare on Friday.
A beneficiary, Nyamuch Stephen Kai, told Radio Tamazuj that she received a wheelchair that would help ease her movements.
“We appreciate and thank the organization for giving us wheelchairs, white canes and crutches even if they were not enough for all of us. Those who missed will get next time as promised,” she said.
Stephen Mawich, who received one crutch, explained that only one was available but he felt it would not be of much help, as he required two.
“I told them that one crutch will not support my movement. It is better for me to receive two because I can then move freely,” he said.
“They promised to bring enough crutches next time and give me two,’’ he said.
The Unity State Director General in the Ministry of Gender and Child Social Welfare, Gattuor Makuach, confirmed the distribution of the 300 devices.
Gattuor said WART had partnerships with the US agencies and acknowledged the support it was giving to the people with disabilities.
He explained that not every case was attended to be because of the inadequate funds, adding that WART would engage with UNMISS for additional support.
WART Project Officer Deng Gatjacka also confirmed the assistance to the 300 PwDs.
Gatjacka said the distribution was informed by the suffering of the PwDs, which saw them write a proposal for funding.
The distribution was conducted in Bentiu Town, Rubkona and the Bentiu IDP camp.
