Marie Noel, a Monroe County, PA, resident who voted for President Joe Biden in 2020 but switched her vote to Donald Trump in 2024, explained why she voted for the president-elect despite his comments about the Haitian community.
“I think he is the change this country needs,” Noel told CNN’s Gary Tuchman.
Noel told Tuchman she wants to see Trump “take care of the border — too much immigrants coming in.”
“Even though I am an immigrant,” Noel noted. “I am from Haiti. I came in the proper way. I just feel like everyone should come in the proper way.”
Asked about Trump’s baseless claim about Haitian immigrants eating pets in Springfield, OH, Noel dismissed the president-elect’s remarks as “shock value.”
“That’s how I feel about it,” she said. “I don’t take it personally. I don’t believe my country is like that.”
The reporter also spoke with a first time voter who chose Trump because, Tuchman reports, “education is her top issue.”
“I have never voted. this was my first year ever voting,” Emily Rivera told CNN. “I have a child and I want to see the future get better. I understand why people think he incites hatred. I feel like that is what people want you to think.”
Trump has pledged to “close up the Department of Education.”
