A closer look at China’s role in global poverty reduction

As the G20 Summit addresses global poverty, hunger and inequality, China’s achievements in poverty reduction take center stage. Over the last 40 years, China has lifted nearly 800 million people out of extreme poverty, contributing about 75 percent of global poverty reduction since 1978.

“By any measure, the speed and scale of China’s poverty reduction is historically unprecedented,” states the report Four Decades of Poverty Reduction in China, published by China’s State Council and the World Bank.

Moreover, rural disposable income in formerly impoverished counties has significantly increased, rising from 6,079 yuan in 2013 to 16,396 yuan ($2,316) in 2023. This steady income growth reflects the lasting impact of China’s poverty alleviation efforts on rural communities.
