Arab and Islamic leaders have called for suspending Israel’s U.N. membership in response to its war and aggression in Gaza and Lebanon.
During a summit in Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit emphasized the urgency of the proposal.
He described it as a vital step toward addressing long-standing grievances.
Gheit noted that Israel’s 1949 U.N. admission under Resolution 181 should be reconsidered.
He expressed confidence that many nations would back this move.
The summit, attended by leaders from across the Arab and Islamic world, also endorsed a Turkish-led initiative aiming to halt arms shipments to Israel.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan stressed the need for accountability, urging the international community to confront Israeli actions.
The summit’s final statement called for global support for the suspension proposal and an end to weapons transfers to Israel.
Last month, UN special rapporteur on the Palestinian territories Francesca Albanese said the United Nations should consider suspending Israel as a member state due to its continuing “genocide” against the Palestinians.
This was a day after she published her report alleging that Israel was not just committing war crimes or crimes against humanity in Gaza, but a genocide.
