The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on Wednesday conducted a one-day training and awareness on the upcoming elections and constitution making in Gudele West, suburb of Juba.
The workshop attended by 60 community leaders, women and youth, aimed to equip them with knowledge on the most basic obligations of UNMISS in the country.
Speaking during opening of a workshop, the UNMISS Public Information Officer and Head of the Community Outreach Unit, Reuben Inaju, said the grassroots campaign would provide updates on the progress of the peace process and give opportunity to communities to interact with the mission.
“We are going to tell you how you can become part of the process to ensure that your vote is captured in the constitution. And if you have questions about the constitution making, the gentleman here is an expert and he is going to answer your questions,” Inaju said.
“We are also going to discuss the UNMISS mandates. In addition, I know you have many questions about UNMISS; why they are here, what they are doing in the whole peace process, what is their contribution to the election and all other things. To the best of our ability, we will try to answer your questions,” he added.
The Chief of Gudele West Pcitmos Bakiri said the peace would come from within South Sudanese.
“The peace will come from us and go to the other people outside,” said Bakiri.
On October 17, UNMISS, in partnership with the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) and the Ceasefire Transitional Security Arrangement Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM), launched a grassroots campaign aimed to enhance the civic and political space.
It also aimed to create awareness about the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
