A Ugandan private contractor who was arrested and allegedly held unlawfully at Jebel Market Police Station in Juba has been released on bail after spending several days in detention.
Waiswa Trinity Muzamiru confirmed to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that a friend provided security for his release on bail.
The contractor who was detained over an ongoing dispute with the Givehealth Organization, explained that the lengthy delay in his release stemmed from the demand for a USD 2,100 as bail, which he was unable to raise.
“I have been released on bail. I am now free but will wait for the day the case will be taken to court,” he stated.
Muzamiru was contracted by Givehealth Organization in 2023 to oversee a construction project that concluded in June 2024. His role included monitoring, supervising, and procuring materials for the project. He however claims to have encountered significant challenges with payment following the completion of his duties, which have now led to legal troubles.
Givehealth Organization has yet to respond to requests for comment, and attempts to reach the police spokesperson were unsuccessful.
Muzamiru urged South Sudanese authorities to either take his case to court or allow him to remain free on bail until the proceedings commence.
According to South Sudanese law, arrested individuals must be presented in court within 24 hours, raising concerns about the legality of Muzamiru’s prolonged detention.
