The national average price for a gallon of regular gas increased on Wednesday to $3.084 from Tuesday’s price of $3.078, according to AAA. Wednesday’s slight increase bucks the recent trend of falling gas prices after last week’s presidential election. Gas prices have fluctuated in recent months but have mostly trended downward. Wednesday’s price is the least expensive for a gallon of regular gas since January 2024, when the average price was $3.075.
Wednesday’s price is less expensive than a week ago, when the average gallon of regular gas cost $3.107. A month ago, the national average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.201; a year ago, it was $3.365. The cost of gas has been an important topic in the country’s political discourse for much of the last few years, as President Joe Biden was burdened with high gas prices during most of his term.
Earlier this year, gas prices began to fall. Yet despite this string of decreases at the pumps, gas prices remain higher today than during the last months and days of President-elect Donald Trump’s first term. Nevertheless, gas prices continue to fluctuate across the nation. Currently, Hawaii is the state with the most expensive gas prices in the country, with a cost of $4.582 per gallon on Wednesday. Oklahoma has the least expensive gas in the nation, costing $2.606 per gallon on Wednesday.

Maryland
Gas prices in Maryland increased on Wednesday, with the average price for a gallon of regular gas rising to $3.055 from Tuesday’s price of $3.046. Prices have been trending downward in the state for the last month, with a few exceptions. Wednesday’s price is slightly less expensive than what gas was a week ago, when it was $3.057 per gallon. Prices are also cheaper than a month ago in Maryland when residents paid $3.241 for a gallon of regular gas.
Delaware
Gas prices in Delaware continued their downward trend, falling to $2.956 on Wednesday, a slight decrease from Tuesday’s price of $2.957 per gallon. Gas prices in the First State have remained in the same range for the last week and a half, fluctuating between $3.00 and 2.95 per gallon. A week ago, a gallon of regular gas in the state cost $2.965. Gas prices in Maryland are much lower today than a month ago when a gallon of regular gas cost $3.19.

Virginia
Gas prices in Virginia increased to over $3 per gallon on Wednesday, coming in with a price of $3.005, an increase from Tuesday’s price of $2.986. Gas prices have remained in the same price range in Virginia for the last week, fluctuating between $2.98 and $3.01 per gallon. A week ago, a gallon of regular gas in the state was $3.003 per gallon. Before that, gas prices in the state were trending downward for weeks. A month ago, Virginians paid $3.135 per gallon for regular gas.
Washington, D.C.
On Wednesday, gas prices decreased in Washington, D.C., with the average price for a gallon of regular gas falling to $3.246. This was a slight drop from Tuesday’s price of $3.252. A week ago, the average price for a gallon of gas in Washington was slightly more expensive than today, with a price of $3.268 per gallon. And a month ago in the nation’s capital, the average price for a gallon of gas was more expensive than it is on Wednesday when residents paid $3.305 per gallon.
