Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – In an effort to inspire Iraqi women to obtain regular health examinations and confront their worries, First Lady of Iraq, Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed, recently shared her experience with cancer with the public.
To combat the stigma associated with cancer and promote early screening across Iraq, the First Lady recounted her personal experience with cancer for the first time in a moving and compelling video that was shown by Kurdsat Broadcasting Corporation.
“I am pleased to share my personal story with you, a story that happened years ago, and can be seen as an example of success and hope for those suffering from it,” said Ahmed during her speech.
“Cancer is not the end of the world; it can be treated. If I had gone for screening earlier, my treatment period might have been much shorter, rather than exceed five years. The later you start treatment, the more pain, difficulty and hospital visits you face,” said Ahmed.
The First Lady’s speech, which was delivered during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, emphasized the vital need of early detection and preventative care.
“I urge everyone, especially women, to take care of themselves with regular screenings and check ups. Hair loss, or feeling weak and pain are not the end. The most important thing is your determination and willpower, and to be a fortress for yourself. With persistence and resolve, you can overcome this disease,” added Ahmed.
