Joy Harjo is one of the most respected poets in the United States. A member of the Muscogee Nation, in 2019, she became the first Native American to be named the Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, commonly referred to as the United States Poet Laureate. She renewed this honor twice, holding it until 2022. Other writers who have held the title include Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Frost, Nobel Prize winners Louise Glück and Joseph Brodsky, as well the incumbent, Ada Limón.
