Chinese foreign ministry congratulates Trump on U.S. presidential win

The Chinese Foreign Ministry congratulated Donald Trump on being elected as the president of the United States on Wednesday night.

“We respect the choice of the American people and congratulate Mr. Trump on being elected as the president of the United States,” the ministry stated on its official website.

Earlier on Wednesday, before the election results had come out, the Foreign Ministry had said that China’s policy on the U.S. remains consistent.

“China will continue to view and handle its relations with the United States based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation,” Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said at a daily press briefing in response to a question on the U.S. presidential election results.

Trump, former U.S. president and Republican presidential candidate, declared victory at his election headquarters in West Palm Beach, Florida on Wednesday after Fox News projected that he has garnered more than 270 Electoral College votes to win the presidency.

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris called Trump to congratulate him on winning the election and delivered a concession speech, saying the results must be accepted.
