Details: The newly elected Senator from West Virginia will be the state’s current governor, Republican Jim Justice.

The Senate is currently divided 51-49 in favour of the Democrats. With a third of Senate seats up for reelection in 2024, most of which are held by Democrats, pre-election forecasts suggested a high likelihood of Republicans gaining the majority.

Pre-election forecasts indicated a high likelihood of a majority shift in favour of the Republicans. The change in party affiliation of the senator from West Virginia further supports this prediction.

Previously, former Democratic Governor Joe Manchin held the seat but has now retired. West Virginia has been a Republican-leaning state for some time.
