Details: Fulton County police reported that two polling stations in Union City, near Atlanta, were temporarily closed due to false bomb threats on 5 November. Raffensperger confirmed that the threats originated from Russia.
Quote: “In the interest of public safety, we always check that out, and we’ll just continue to be very responsible when we hear about stuff like that.”
The Secretary of State believes these actions are an attempt to sow discord among Americans.
“That tells you a little bit about the Russians. They’re not our friends. Anyone that thinks they are hasn’t been reading the newspapers,” the official remarked.
Background:
- Last week, Georgia officials labelled as “deliberate disinformation” a fake video on X (Twitter), in which a Haitian immigrant claimed to have voted multiple times in the presidential election. US intelligence linked this video to Russia.
- US intelligence had previously reported that foreign adversaries would attempt to influence the November 2024 presidential election by adapting their operations to the country’s domestic political events.
