US coastguard prioritizes Indo-Pacific, monitoring China and Russia
The US Coastguard has outlined a new operational posture statement that prioritizes operations in the Indo-Pacific region and Arctic Ocean. In response to challenges posed by China and Russia, the Coastguard aims to maintain a free, open, and rules-based maritime commons in these critical passageways.
The Indo-Pacific is highlighted as a top regional priority due to its geostrategic importance and role in global trade. Efforts include combatting predatorial fishing practices, expanding presence in Southeast and South Asia, and investing in resources for the Indo-Pacific region.
Additionally, the US Coastguard plans to enhance its Arctic capabilities with a new fleet mix of icebreakers to ensure persistent presence in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Vice-Admiral Peter Gautier emphasized the need to expand the Coastguard’s capabilities, especially in building heavy icebreakers to address challenges faced by the maritime force and law enforcement agency.
