The US Department of State has approved the sale of air-defense systems and radars to Taiwan, causing tension with Beijing, which views the island as part of China. The approval includes the possible sale of NASAMS air-defense systems and radars to Taipei for an estimated cost of $1.16 billion.
Recently, Washington delivered Harpoon Block II anti-ship missiles to Taiwan under a deal approved in 2020. The implementation of the proposed sale would require the assignment of US government representatives to provide technical support and training.
Additionally, the Department of State approved a potential sale of Radar Turnkey Systems to Taiwan for an estimated cost of $828 million. This comes after US President Joe Biden authorized $567 million in military support for Taiwan last month.
The Chinese government has urged the US to stop selling weapons to Taiwan, emphasizing that Beijing will not renounce using force against Taipei if it declares independence. The situation escalated after China conducted military drills near the island.
Despite Taiwan’s self-governing status after the Chinese Civil War in 1949, most countries recognize it as part of China. However, the US maintains close relations with Taiwan and continues to provide military support.
