The UK is increasing its naval presence in the Pacific to support US-led efforts to counter China’s maritime expansion. Prime Minister Keir Starmer will unveil plans for more joint fishing patrols and expanded Royal Navy operations while in Samoa for a Commonwealth meeting. These efforts aim to address natural disasters, illegal fishing, and the growing presence of Chinese fleets in the region.
Other countries like the US and France have also announced similar initiatives in the South Pacific. Starmer emphasized the UK’s commitment to the Indo-Pacific region and its historical ties, especially post-Brexit. The UK will join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, becoming the first European nation to do so.
While in Samoa, Starmer will announce collaborations with Australia and New Zealand on business and renewable energy projects, highlighting the UK’s strategic focus on the Pacific region.
