South Korea Ready to Discuss Nuclear Power Plant Construction in Kazakhstan
During a recent visit to South Korea, Kazakhstan’s Energy Minister Almassadam Satkaliyev discussed the possibility of Korean companies participating in the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan. South Korea has expressed interest in engaging in talks regarding the project.
Minister Satkaliyev met with representatives from Korea’s top energy firms and government agencies to explore collaboration opportunities across various energy sectors, including oil, gas, and renewable projects. The discussions also touched on potential models for the nuclear project involving prominent Korean companies.
In a referendum held in October 2024, over 71% of voters in Kazakhstan supported the construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized the importance of developing the plant through an international consortium, considering technology suppliers from countries like China, South Korea, Russia, and France.
Plans to build the nuclear power plant near Lake Balkhash have been in the works since June 2022, signaling Kazakhstan’s move towards diversifying its energy sources.
