Reviving a long-dormant project, Petrobras has given the green light to resume work on the Nitrogen Fertilizer Unit (UFN-III) in Três Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul, with a significant investment of R$3.5 billion. This decision aligns with the government’s push to boost domestic fertilizer production, crucial for Brazil as a major agricultural producer heavily reliant on imports.
The Brazil Senate Agriculture Committee passing the Profert bill further highlights the country’s commitment to developing its fertilizer industry, with a goal of channeling R$30 billion by 2030. Petrobras plans to restart construction in June 2025, aiming to promote local contractors over international ones.
The strategic location of the UFN-III plant in Três Lagoas positions it close to key agricultural regions, emphasizing its importance in reducing Brazil’s fertilizer imports. Once operational, the plant is set to produce 1.2 million tons of urea and 70,000 tons of ammonia annually, supporting essential crops like corn, sugarcane, coffee, wheat, and cotton.
Expected to begin operations in 2028, Petrobras’ renewed interest in the fertilizer sector signifies a milestone in Brazil’s journey towards self-sufficiency in fertilizers and strengthening its agricultural industry.
