No queue-jumping for Hong Kong tenants in public housing shake-up: subpar flats affected

Hong Kong Government to Phase Out Subdivided Flats

The Hong Kong government is taking steps to phase out smaller subdivided flats with inadequate living conditions. Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho Wing-yin announced that homes smaller than 86 sq ft without windows and independent toilets will be targeted in the legislative process next year.

Despite concerns from tenants affected by this move, Ho clarified that they will not receive priority for public housing allocation. This decision is aimed at preventing people from moving into substandard living spaces to exploit the system.

Ho emphasized the need for caution in handling the issue to avoid incentivizing occupancy in poor conditions. She also highlighted the average rent for subdivided flats across Hong Kong, with costs varying by region.
