James Sung, veteran HK political scientist & commentator, dies at 71

Renowned Hong Kong political analyst and writer James Sung Lap-kung has passed away at the age of 71.

The Hong Kong Pui Ching Alumni Association, where Sung served as vice-chairman since 2022, confirmed his death two days ago on Saturday morning.

During his time with the association, he played a key role in enhancing the organization and orchestrating various events that brought together alumni worldwide.

Along with being the founding director of the Hong Kong Progress and Perfection Research Institute, Sung was recognized for his incisive political analysis and editorial pieces.

After completing his education at Pui Ching Middle School, Sung pursued music at Grantham College of Education before delving into teaching and further academic pursuits in the US.

Returning to Hong Kong in 1992, Sung established the public administration course at City University and served as the course coordinator for nearly three decades.
