The Decline of Burglary Cases in Hong Kong
Burglary cases in Hong Kong have seen a significant decline following targeted air and ground operations over the summer, with associated losses in the first nine months of this year down 48 per cent year on year, according to Police Commissioner Raymond Siu Chak-yee. Public concerns over burglaries had been on the rise earlier in the year, but recent efforts have proven effective in combating this issue.
Commissioner Siu also emphasized the importance of engaging with young people who were involved in the 2019 protests, warning against pushing them into a corner. The recent burglary at former police chief Andy Tsang Wai-hung’s home further highlighted the seriousness of the issue.
Investigations have revealed a pattern of burglaries targeting residential areas, particularly village houses. The police force has implemented extensive anti-burglary measures, including increased patrols, community awareness campaigns, and high-altitude patrols using drones and helicopters in upscale neighborhoods.
