The cycling community in Hong Kong is advocating for greater public education on the importance of wearing helmets while cycling. However, there are mixed opinions on the government’s proposal to make helmet-wearing mandatory.
The Transport Department is working on amendments to legislation to enforce helmet-wearing and will present the changes to the Legislative Council soon.
Recent police data shows a significant increase in cyclist fatalities, with eight deaths recorded between January and August, double the previous year’s figures. Six of the cyclists who died were not wearing helmets.
Cycling company, Cyclink, supports the proposed amendments and emphasizes helmet use in their classes. They believe that alongside regulations, more public education is needed to encourage helmet usage.
