A recent survey reveals a heartwarming trend of Greeks who left during the financial crisis returning home. The primary reasons for their return are attributed to family ties and the allure of the familiar environment, with 82% citing family and friends as their main motivation. Greece’s climate and natural surroundings also played a significant role, with 62% mentioning it as a reason.
Interestingly, tax incentives offered by the government seemed to have less influence, only impacting 14% of those surveyed. The study conducted by the National Documentation and Electronic Content Center and published by Kathimerini focused on 350,000 returning Greeks. It found that reforms and improvements in infrastructure and government services could further encourage more expatriates to come back.
The survey sheds light on the demographics of those returning, with a majority being men aged 35-54 holding college or advanced degrees. Despite economic challenges, over half remain optimistic about their future in Greece, emphasizing the importance of home, family, and emotional connections over financial stability.
