Georgia’s pivotal election decides EU membership fate | Elections Update

The fate of Georgia’s young democracy and its European aspirations hangs in the balance as the country’s parliamentary elections are in progress. With an unprecedented alliance of pro-Western opposition parties challenging the ruling Georgian Dream party, the outcome could determine Georgia’s path towards the European Union.

Polls opened with 3.5 million eligible voters, indicating a shift towards opposition parties forming a coalition to replace Georgian Dream, led by billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili. The stakes are high, as the election could pave the way for Georgia’s EU accession talks to resume.

Amid accusations of stifling democracy and aligning with Russia, Georgian Dream faces a tough battle. President Salome Zourabichvili expressed hope for a pro-Western victory, while Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze remains confident in his party’s success.

‘Dragging us back’

Voters see the election as pivotal in steering Georgia towards EU membership or authoritarianism leaning towards Russia. Georgian Dream’s recent shift in policies has raised concerns about its direction, with opposition parties and President Zourabichvili highlighting alleged voter intimidation and the suppression of dissenting voices.

As Georgians cast their ballots, the world watches closely to witness the country’s democratic journey unfold.
