Increasing Power Cuts in Ecuador Due to Severe Drought
Due to the worst drought in decades, Ecuador will be increasing power cuts from eight to 14 hours a day starting Friday. Energy and Mines Minister Ines Manzano announced the decision, stating that it was a necessary step to address the challenging situation the country is facing.
President Daniel Noboa had previously promised to gradually reduce the cuts, but the severe drought and low water levels in key hydroelectric plants have forced the government to take drastic measures. The country heavily relies on water sources for its energy supply, making the current situation even more critical.
Colombia’s decision to halt electricity sales to Ecuador has further complicated the issue, prompting Colombian President Gustavo Petro to express solidarity and call for collaboration in developing alternative energy sources like solar and wind power.
Despite delays in sourcing generators from the US, Manzano remains hopeful that Ecuadorians will see some relief by Christmas. The government is working to recover generating capacity and acquire new sources of energy to mitigate the effects of the ongoing drought.
