Crisafulli set to become QLD Premier as Miles holds out

David Crisafulli emerges as the next Premier of Queensland, although Steven Miles has not yet conceded defeat. Despite earlier predictions of a Labor wipeout, the LNP did not achieve the expected blue-wash in the election. While a majority LNP government seems probable, it is not confirmed. The current tally stands at 44 seats for LNP, 32 for Labor, 3 for Katter’s Australian Party, and one Independent, with 14 seats uncertain.

In his victory speech, Crisafulli expressed confidence in the LNP’s ability to govern with a majority. He emphasized the need for a fresh start and pledged to address key issues such as crime, health, housing, and living costs in the state over the next four years.

Crisafulli highlighted the significance of humility and decency in governing beyond four years, as the LNP looks to break a long-standing election trend. The graciousness of Crisafulli’s victory speech earned praise as a “Premier’s speech” by Nine political editor Charles Croucher.

Despite admitting defeat, Steven Miles commended the Labor party’s performance and acknowledged the challenge they faced in the election. As the count continues, uncertainty remains as both LNP and Labor fall short of the required seats for a majority government.

Despite losses in key seats, Labor looks to the future as Miles is expected to continue leading the opposition. The night also saw other significant defeats, including Greens MP Amy MacMahon losing in South Brisbane and the Green party facing a lackluster performance overall.
