The INOU expresses concern over proposed penalty rate increase for jobseekers
The Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed (INOU) has voiced its worries over the government’s plan to double the penalty rate for jobseekers who fail to engage with employment services. The proposed penalty rate would rise to €90, up from the current rate of €44, leaving some individuals with only €154 per week to survive on.
The INOU emphasizes that penalties should be a last resort and advocates for proactive support for vulnerable individuals in the labor market. They highlight that while Ireland may be considered at “full employment”, not everyone seeking a job will find one due to various barriers like the duration of unemployment.
Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys defended the proposed rate increase, stating that it aims to encourage compliance with job-seeking requirements. Reduced rates will only apply if a jobseeker fails to engage with employment services, following at least two notifications urging them to do so.
Overall, the INOU urges a more supportive approach to help individuals make meaningful choices in their job search.
