The Mozambican capital Maputo was left in chaos as violent protests erupted following Frelimo’s re-election after almost five decades in power. Opposition supporters took to the streets, claiming the election was “stolen” by a “corrupt” electoral commission that declared Daniel Chapo the winner with 71% of the vote.
The results sparked protests in multiple cities, with rioters setting fires and clashing with anti-riot police who deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Chapo, a relatively unknown candidate, will succeed President Filipe Nyusi in January despite opposition leader Venancio Mondlane claiming victory and accusing the government of irregularities. Mondlane called for demonstrations, denouncing the political situation in Mozambique as “rotten and fake.” The European Union observer mission also noted irregularities in the election process.
