U.S. to evacuate diplomats from Haiti amid gang attacks

The United States embassy in Haiti is on high alert as a powerful gang coalition tightens its grip on the capital, leading to the preparation of the evacuation of some non-essential diplomatic staff. Gunmen targeted embassy vehicles, although no personnel were injured. Foreign officials, including a UN helicopter with 18 people on board, have also come under attack. Due to the worsening security situation, around 20 non-essential diplomatic staff members are expected to leave the country soon.

The surge in violence in Haiti, attributed to the powerful gang coalition Viv Ansanm (Live Together), has led to attacks on foreign officials and widespread displacement of Haitians. The conflict has resulted in increased hunger and a desperate need for resources to combat the gangs. Despite efforts by the UN to assist Haiti’s police in regaining control, the resources have been insufficient, leading to a standstill in progress.

The situation in Haiti remains critical, with gangs controlling several neighborhoods and brutal violence being used. The inability to control the gangs has left the southern peninsula with millions of people at the mercy of a relatively small group, creating a dire humanitarian crisis.
